Tech Thursday: Managing references

Convert a plain text bibliography into reference manager ready file.

I discovered this week an excellent combination of tools for taking a text-only bibliography and importing it into a reference management system so that the reference items can be more easily tracked and used for future projects.

If you’re like me, you probably have various bit of bibliographies here and there from different projects, and probably in text form. I discovered a great - free - online tool that takes your text input and identifies the different fields, assigning each the tag it needs to be (most accurately) uploaded into a reference manager: AnyStyle.io

All you have to do is paste the text of your bibliography into the text box (as in the image below) and click “Parse.”

Then, you save the formatted, tagged, references for uploading into your favorite reference software.

I use Zotero because it’s free and simple - and has been around a long time so it’s unlikely to disappear and take all my citations away - but there are many other options. U.C. Berkeley library has a helpful article about different citation management tools. Once you’ve imported the file, all your references are ready for use!

Wishing you the best as we head into final exams…
