Tip: Summer Break!
A short hiatus, searching old newsletters by topic & subscriptions to support emergency aid for students.
Although many of us have swung right into summer teaching already, I always feel that it’s still a bit of a break once May fully arrives. Something about fewer school emails coming in, fewer advisees needing help, committees have largely wound down - it always seems like the summer months are just a bit less harried than the academic year. To support a bit of a rest and recharge, Tips for Teaching Professors will be taking a small break from now through the start of June. I plan to be back the week of June 14th with a focus on exploring course design - Backwards Design and UDL, specifically, although I’ll happily entertain any questions or requests! - with a series of posts in June/July.
In the meantime, I have over a year of newsletters to browse through. If you’d like to sort by tags, a feature not available in Substack, mosy on over to the Zotero library I’ve set up here.
Finally, you may have noticed that I activated the option to become a paid subscriber. In turning on the option to subscribe to this newsletter, I have a goal of earning enough to support a donation to Northern Virginia Community College’s Emergency Student Aid fund. I have selected this fund to support because of the immediate impact emergency grants provide to students in need, allowing students to remain in school even when experiencing hardship. I have often heard from my students how much just $500 can help when faced with a car repair, unexpected medical expenses, or childcare issues.
My goal is modest to start: I would like to be able to make a $1,000 donation to the emergency fund on my birthday at the end of summer, with the hope of continuing regular donations to this and other education-related causes. If you feel so inclined to join me, you can switch to a paid subscription here.
Whether you subscribe or not, the vast majority of content will continue to be freely available to all & I am so happy that you are here.
