A teaching podcast, community college enrollments, and looking ahead to winter break.
What I’m reading/watching…
If you’re tired of reading - my eyes are definitely feeling the fatigue of reading final papers and exams - here’s a great podcast to check out: Lecture Breakers by Barbi Honeycutt, where she has conversations with a variety of experts on different teaching-focused topics.
How the Pandemic Worsened — and Highlighted — Community Colleges’ Chronic Challenges
At another level, the pandemic has magnified existing socioeconomic inequities, turning gaps into chasms. At another level still, the past nine months have revealed that community colleges still have work to do to better serve the needs of their students
In How to Have a Restorative Holiday Break During a Pandemic the author urges us to take a true digital detox, and to consider taking up a physical challenge, a service challenge, and a connection challenge. For my part, I plan on an out-of-office-and-not-available message on my email and setting some firm limits on social and other types of media; I have several books headed my way - actual paper books! - to fill the gaps. I’m going to set reminders for a run or walk every day (I won’t make every day, but 3-4 days a week would be great). Each year my kids and I make giant batches of poorly decorated cookies and deliver to friends and neighbors, so that will be my connection piece. As for service…I am open to suggestions that fit our family’s strict social distancing regimen.
Happy reading!
