I am so thrilled to share that a team I'm co-leading was awarded a very cool Fund for Excellence and Innovation grant from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia for a multi-institutional research and faculty development project about teaching and learning with AI.
To better share about this exciting project, I’ve launched a subsection to the Tips newsletter. I hope that you will choose to subscribe for occasional project updates (not more than once a month) that will include opportunities to get involved in the research and faculty development projects as well as opportunities to explore the materials as they are developed.
The project emerged as a “mega-SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning)” investigation of artificial intelligence and its impacts on our teaching and our students’ learning.
Current sub-projects
We currently have eight sub-projects focused on different aspects of AI and teaching in development.
Onboarding: What Do Students Need to Know Before Being Invited to Use AI - evaluate which onboarding activities are beneficial to students to increase comfort in using text generators in college courses.
OER for Teaching with AI - design, develop, and evaluate an adaptable OER resource for faculty/instructors to aid in understanding the principles of AI, with examples of AI-driven assignments and class policies.
Measuring and Grading Learning Done with AI - explore how instructors measure and grade the learning that’s done with AI.
AI-incorporating learning - articulate what high-tech vs. low-tech learning looks like across classrooms and departments.
Mapping AI-Proofness: A Preliminary Cross-Disciplinary Investigation - develop a typology of possible assignments and “grads” their AI-proofness on a continuum.
The Potential of AI for Personalized and Constructive Feedback - explore the potential of AI systems in providing personalized and constructive feedback to students on their written or spoken work.
AI as a Support for Students with Disabilities - explore how artificial intelligence can support students with disabilities or learning differences in higher education contexts or settings.
